Not too mention a telnet to port 25 (or 110 testing pop3) would have 
also failed. A fact that I can never seem to hammer into the boneheads @ 
comcast when I've had email issues.

Most ISPs only do this on non standard ports unless the user hasn't paid 
their bill. ;-)
