All I know is that leads to lack of air flow while deceptively lowering the "case" temp sensor.

The TT case I use has 2x 80mm fans blowing on the card area, 1 sucks direct from the side. So my video, chipset & cpu get a decent amount of cool air blown on them. Small wind tunnel when gaming but QFan makes it tolerable under "normal" use.

I believe that heat kills caps. I've seen blown caps on several machines that were extremely dirty. In each case, the caps were close to the video card (several times the video fan was dead) or the CPU.
