A long time ago tomshardware published an article stating otherwise in a comparison between Intel and 3com 10/100 NICs. Things certainly could have changed by then.

These days board makers prefer the new Marvell 10/100/1000 PCIe integrated NIC - even over the Intel CSA modules.
