I've already sunk enough money into this HTPC and really don't want to shell out the cash to buy a whole new machine, or the $200 to M$ for another freakin OS. If I can find a freeware/OSS/shareware solution I
The problem is that Microsoft misleads people on the minimum qualifications for a computer to work well with an operating system upgrade. Microsoft loves 2 year computers and prefers to sell upgrade software before you junk your junk. That way they get 3 hits in 2 years, sometimes. The original OEM, the Upgrade software and then the software on the new computer.
So put that $90.00 for an operating system into a quality custom built computer and make Microsoft wait 5 years for your money to go their way again.
It is not the bucks people pay for their OS that they are complaining about. It is how often they have to pay those bucks!
And note that there is no way any hardware engineered and manufactured for XP will accomodate Longhorn as well as future hardware engineered and manufactured for Longhorn. True, I have a HP printer and HP scanner I bought before XP came out. I have the latest XP drivers for each. I still have issues and I will have issues unless and until I purchase a new printer and scanner engineered and manufactured for XP. The same applies to motherboards and other hardware. For many an upgrade will work flawlessly. For many others it is a nightmare.
