There has been a bit of discussion in the online media about this for the past couple of weeks. I don't know if it will happen, but it started with one of the head guys at Sony saying they were "open to discussions" about merging the formats.
I think this can only be a good thing. Different recording formats are one thing (and not really too much of an issue now because of all-format writers) but different retail formats are definitely not good.
