Absolutely, infact, there has always been a single processor version of the Xserve since its introduction.
If I buy a tower mac it should work on that right? Also most tower macs have 1 NIC port.
Will any PCI nic work or does it have to be MAC? If so then where can I get MAC NIC's?Not _any_, but a lot, there aren't 'mac specific' nics (videocards need to be mac specific for video output at boot, mainly.)
Apparently 3c905's do work though (of course, any remotely modern tower mac will have gigabit ethernet onboard)
I'd suggest looking up something like a dual 867Mhz 'MDD' PowerMac G4 or a dual 1Ghz Quicksilver, would provide you with more than enough grunt and be low on the bank breaking.
