My Thinkpad running XP PRO SP2 has developed a hang when I try to use Windows Update .I manually update every couple of weeks, and it has been working fine until the beginning of the week.
I launch Windows Update,..... Scan for new updates..... IE displays the new updates.... I select all Critical updates and tell it to install. The download screen comes up ... and then it just sits there as if it is trying to connect. Task manager never shows a hang, but it acts like one, and I have to kill the process to get rid of it. It doesn't error out, so the notify MS box never even appears, which might be able to give me a clue as to the problem.
It is not the LAN, cable, or router, or MS Server connection, as I have switched cables with PCs that I just did a successful update with. Outside of doing a update, my network / Internet connection works fine.
I have tried both automatic and custom updates, but with the same result. I have disabled the firewall, no anti-virus, no spy watching software. It is running clean, and straight up, with no monitoring what so ever.
I can download, upload, do anything I want, except Windows updates. I have been screwing around with this periodically for days, but nothing I do makes a difference.I have been searching the knowledge base but have found nothing.
Anybody see this behavior before? Anybody have a solution?
Thanks
