Exciting times. Verizon is in full FIOS deployment mode....Cox has a new 9/1
tier in AZ and a 15/2 tier in Virginia. DOCSIS 3 (if we ever see it)
promises up to 160mbit/s by using multiple channels. BellSouth and SBC are
in the beginning stages of deploying FTTN (Fiber to the Node), and using
ADSL2+ to deliver 25mbit/s...though it is rumored that when the plans are
made operational, they will use the new VDSL2 to deliver 100mbit/s full
duplex, instead. Some of this bandwidth will be reserved for HD IPTV, but at
100FD, there should be plenty left.
Of course, these are all theoretical speeds. Still, within a few years,
10mbit/s should be the norm. It is interesting, however, to see exactly how
the companies are competing. Cable internet providers have been increasing
speeds pretty dramatically lately, but keeping costs pretty
constant...Verizon of course is deploying FIOS, but that will be unavailable
for most people for a long time. In general, the telcos are making ADSL
ridiculously cheap. SBC has 1.5/384 for $15/mo, and 3.0/512 for $25/mo. Thus
far, average consumers are reacting more positively to reduced prices than
increased speeds.
