Could also be upper & lower filters interfering with the devices. CD burning, back up & anti-protection software can cause this.

This site has tools for viewing the filters:

I go with this suggestion also, especially if you have mapped network drives. This has caused me a few head scratches in the past. Also you could load a CD Linux distro to check if h/ware is OK.
cheers

look in drive management, may be a drive letter conflict.
I always move the rom drives to f and g to leave e and d open for
    thumb drives and cameras

OK I feel like this is a computer 101 question, but here goes.

Windows XP Pro SP1 can't see my CD drives in Explorer, My
Computer, or any Windows programs. But they show up in Device
Manager as normal. I have deleted them & restarted as well as
reinstalled the IDE controller. It wasn't showing up in Device
Manager until I reinstalled it. After multiple restarts no joy!!

    Any suggestions???
