It may seem obvious, and you may have already done this, but first I would go to the providers web site, where they will, in all likelihood, have a step by step for hooking up to them, and in many cases through a modem >>router>>LAN.

Versizon DSL, for example, gives away a Linksys wireless router to people that sign up for a year. If not, I would call tech to ask them exactly is required for hookup.

Once you know that your modem is setup right, and the problem is with the router, then I would call Belkin Tech, which is easy to reach, and has pretty good tech support for their network hardware. There is no sense playing a guessing game when you can talk to people who will help to guide you.

I am pretty sure the Westell is in bridge mode. I DL'd a Westell diagnostic tool and when I ran the program one part had a drop-down style box that said "bridge" in it. The box was greyed-out and could not be changed.

Previously, PPPoE login was being done on the PC. My brother-in-law would start the PPPoE software, it would show his user name as: [EMAIL PROTECTED], and he would enter the PW. Once I had the router connected between the modem and PC, I did not use the PPPoE software and had disconnected the previous PPPoE software session.

Are you sure the modem is in bridged mode?
If it works while connected directly to the PC, then PPPoE login is
being done either on the modem or on the PC. If the former, then
the modem is not bridged. If the latter, I trust you are not running
the PPPoE software when connected through the router.
Incidentally, PacBell recently changed its DSL login requirements in
that [EMAIL PROTECTED] must be used instead of just username.

As a long time cable modem user I have successfully setup several different routers for use in my home network without any significant problems. My brother-in-law has been using PacBell DSL for a few years and now would like to setup a home network. I have spent the past several hours trying to get a router connected and working without success. His DSL modem is a Westell Wirespeed model B90-36R516-01 Rev E, circa 2000. The router is a Belkin F5D7231-4 wireless router. The steps I've taken are as follows:

1. Westell DSL modem directly connected to PC - Internet connection is working
2. Follow Belking setup wizard, correctly detects PPPoE connection.
3. Connect router to PC, DSL modem to WAN port on router, enter user name and PW into wizard when prompted. 4. Wizard completes but cannot get internet connection. Router lights are showing normal except for the Internet connection light which is blinking (meaning no connection). 5. Manually check router settings. PPPoE selected, correct user name and PW are entered, still no internet.
6. Disconnect router and re-connect only Westell DSL modem, internet works.

As far as I can tell from reading on the DSLreports forums and Westell web sites, the DSL modem is a basic modem operating in bridged mode. No DHCP or other router functions built-in. Is there something I am missing getting a router to work with a DSL modem? Is the Westell too old to work properly with a router?

Thanks,
Jerry
