I am using a sony drive to burn images. So do you think that might be the cause of the skipping on peoples dvd players? But they said it played fine first time and then started skipping on the 2nd and 3rd time they played the disc. That makes me feel like it's a disc issue more than a burner issue.

Sony simply sells rebadged Lite-On units, so they are also crap.
