It has to be searching for installs of Windows (at least I have always
assumed it is)....because after that finishes it shows you all your
installations of Windows and where they are located and asks if you want to
repair/install etc

You can have multiple copies of Windows on the same drive, the problem I had
the one time I tried it was that the Program Files folder was being used by
both installs.....not very good when both versions of Windows are
different........

It was my understanding (could be wrong here) that you technically can have
multiple installs of the OS on the same drive in different locations.  I
thought it was searching to find all installations of the OS.

I booted from the installation CD.  It's searching on the hard drive.
