Why is this news?  This has been around for quite some time... it's a good thing for helping to track down counterfiters... Think about it if not for tracing mechanisims like this and similar codes used on media (floppy disks) they might never have caught BTK.

Sadly, too true...   I read where they broke the Xerox code, but not HP's
or other vendors yet.

They can indeed track the make/model and serial number of whatever printer
printed a particular page.  So much for privacy, huh??  :(
