I had the same idea last year and I bought a Netgear printserver.The problem with printservers is that they are not bidirectional, so you will not be able to use the advanced features of your printer drivers. This is less important in a monochrome laser printer, but a real problem with a color ink jet.

My solution was to use my old 233MMX Latitude laptop and it has worked out great. I am running 2k and I hook up as many printers as necessary, and it can use it for additional backup storage, ftp, whatever.

 Old laptops can be had on Ebay cheaper then you can get a name brand printer.
