I have a computer with the above problem: Take It Apart, Put It Back Together syndrome (you know, where you take a problem system apart to test and when it is reassembled, it no longer exhibits the problem). This system periodically gives me problems. Several days ago, it started randomly rebooting. It has been running fine in the recent months (after the last "re-build" due to summer induced overheating). It got to the point where it would not even complete the boot cycle without shutting down. I tried to run Prime95 and it did not even complete a single iteration without an error. One time during the boot sequence, it froze at the memory test (part way through). Thinking it might be a memory module problem, I downloaded Memtest86 and tested each module separately. Both passed 2 iterations. I put both modules back in and re-tested. No errors or problems. Right now I am running Prime95 again and am in the 3rd test without problems.
Fans all seem to be working and temps normal. Running an AMD 3200+ at 2500+ (333 MHz FSB vs 400 FSB) due to an overheating problem this past summer (never bothered to set it back to 400Mhz after it started cooling down - I use this system as a backup system. It is equipped with a collection of old IDE drives (2x120GB + 2x160MB drives) and I use Karen's Replicator to back up my Main System). OS is Win XP pro with SP2. I did notice the current problem began after a Windows Update was installed. Coincidence? I don't know. While this is mostly a rant, if anyone has a brainstorm about the problem I am experiencing, let me know. I end up spending too much time troubleshooting to end up with no solution except that it now works. I have checked the event log and it doesn't indicate any problems when it shuts down/reboots.
