Well, you did ask for the collective's opinion and according to this
HardOCP (which is more reliable that THG's hardware reviews) article
from last May:
"Cherries on Top?
This particular edition of our upgrade guide gives you the gift of even
more solid upgrades in the future. Both in terms of video and CPU power.
We’ve configured a solid gaming system that provides you the option to
implement NVIDIA’s SLI. We do understand that we could have sent you
down the upgrade path with two 6600GT video cards and washed our hands
of the matter entirely. Instead, we feel that a single 6800GT is a much
more solid upgrade path for similar pricing. What we have left you with
is a system that will provide solid performance and leave the option of
SLI on the table for a future purchase. As video card prices continue to
fall and NVIDIA continues to improve SLI driver technology and SLI
performance compatibility, an additional 6800GT will surely be less cost
than our price here once you’re truly ready to take the SLI plunge."
Not only that Jim, but the recently released 6800GS is almost as fast as
a 6800GT, is SLI compatible and considerably cheaper ($200 plus free
3-day shipping) than a GT. I wasn't trying to prove you "wrong" but
assist you as you asked. Once again, Happy Holidays!

Jim, the only problem with SLI 6600GT's is that a single 6800GT is
faster and less expensive. IMHO the 7800GT is the best gaming SLI
starter card @ the present ($40-50 more expensive than 6800GT but far
superior). Later, you could add a second (probably less expensive)
and get excellent frame rates in unreleased games over the next
couple of years. Is it too late to send your Albatron card back? My
opinion here is admittedly based upon hardware reviews and not actual
experience. Happy holidays! @:)>
Well, I went looking for some 6600GT SLI v 6800GT comparisons. The
most comprehensive one I could find is this here

From what I see on all them nice charts is that the 6600GT SLI will
It looks like I am ok with this purchase I think.
I was going for the best bang for the buck here. Price was a big
issue, xmas is cumming (in white stuff) Comparing the 6600GT, 6800GT
and the new 7800GT

So I could have went with the cheapest 7800GT 256 for $50 more. I
didn't want to spend $50 more. Maybe I am wrong with this but that $50
will be put to good use elsewhere.
