mediawiki is geared towards creating an encyclopedia type website. and for it's purpose, it's working excellently. it's index-based (like an encyclopedia), that's why it's not right for blogging which by definition needs to be chronologically-based.
if what you want is more towards community-based content management system with blogging options, have you tried Drupal? it's at http://drupal.org
