Phonebooking is a pretty unethical practice to start. In my mind, it is only justified in the case of a marginal drive that is clearly having problems, but not overt enough to convince the manufacturer to RMA it. Phonebooking to prevent data recovery seems unjustified--if your data is that important, you shouldn't be sending it back to begin with.

But that's my rule--everyone else must decide what lets them still sleep at night. :)
