I agree that the US is driving the world toward prosperity despite the negative side-effects all around. The people I work with lament the loss of past prosperity when the Unions were King and blue collar employees made $22/hour. They fail to understand the historical reasons why we were so prosperous then, being the only intact economy following the end of WWII and our efforts helping to rebuild Europe and Japan. Times change and the world changes despite our level of discomfort. The more prosperous the other nations of the Earth are the less likely they will covet what their neighbors have and the less reason to go to war. This is just a blip on the radar of Human History and every generation will experience the same uncertainty and fear of change.

In the long term, our ultimate survival depends on us getting the heck off this planet and becoming true citizens of the Universe. The Earth is our womb but we must leave it to grow up. 514 years ago Columbus is credited with discovering the Americas. I wish I could see Humanity 500 years from now and the incredible accomplishments they will have achieved and the vast distances they will have traveled even if I couldn't understand the half of it! In the totality of time and in all of the Cosmos there has never been any other life form like us and there never will be! We are special... we are unique... we are beautiful... Treasure who you are and what you have and make the best of what life has to offer and you will will truly be human and alive. As surely alive as any Cro-Magnon man or woman ever was.

Actually, the "standard of living in the USA" has gone backwards each and every year of the last five years.

But that is not what I said... I said world not us. They are driving us down while we bring them up. There is more of them tho. :(
