It seems to me that a single rail with a total rating equivalent to the dual rails would be better - is it a cost issue, or is there some advantage to dual rails (less noise on each rail?)


One big rail is superior to two smaller rails of "equal" capacity. The reason it was done is safety. Big PSUs were starting to sport 36, 40+ amps on the 12v rail. At 12v, 40A, you're talking 480 watts...that's a lot of power to be messing with, especially over relatively small wires in an uncontrolled environment with a lot of sharp objects. :)
