I have a client who has an XP Pro machine connecting to a 2K machine. They
are sharing the My Documents folder on the 2K machine and mapping it as F:
on the XP one. Every couple of months, it loses it's connection, and now
when I try to map it, it asks me for a username and password (on the XP
machine) before it will connect. How do I set this to stay permanent,
and/or remove the password prompt?
Sounds like to me that the 2k machine is has the User set to change pwd every
60 days or so. Change that to never change & once you map the drive\folder to
XP it's stay permanent but believe me you do NOT want to remove the password
prompt by not having a pwd as Windows will remember the pwd once the share is
mapped you just have to make sure the UN on the 2k machine isn't requiring the
user to change their pwd.
First, make sure Simple File sharing is off: Tools -> Folder Options ->
View -> Advanced Settings: Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)
UNCHECKED.
from a command prompt:
net use F: \\server\sharename /USER:username password /persistent:yes
(That is from memory -- it should be close)
