Do not simply unplug a USB external hard drive or
:: switch it off. This may mess up the file and/or partition structure

:: computer down before you switch off or unplug the external hard
:: drive, unless your clicking on "Stop" worked.

It may, but if you know you haven't been writing to drive for a while (several minutes), it seems to not be much of a problem doing this, in my experience.
