That's for sure.

I ended up buying 3 PATA->SATA adaptors at a local store (1 for DVD, 2 for HDDs). They were about $14 and so far I have no complaints. Guess Intel is quietly encouraging PATA to die..

Which, you have to admit, is one of the dumbest things imaginable to have a SB that doesn't have any PATA control. It -sounds- neat, but come on, how
many SATA DVDRW drives are you seeing out there?

The ICH8 is different than the raid varients.

Those who chose not to license the "R" use the cheaper JMicron instead because it has two sata ports that can do raid and has a PATA port. (ICH8x
does not support PATA at all).

The DS3 has both, if I understand what you mean.

It has 4 SATA connectors running on the ICH8 southbridge.

Then it has 2 SATA connectors that can run in RAID mode and one PATA
connector that run off the Jmicron controller. They're a different
color,
and off to the side a bit. I'm not currently using these at all.

Did you mean that the RAID functioanlity is on the jmicron controller?
If
so, that's correct AFAIK.

What is the feedback on the P5B - Deluxe in regards to the 8 phase

controller and not the ICH8R/ICH8DH/ICH8DO

That imho is basically the perfect combo. The ds3 board is insanely
solid and a great performer

I bought a Gigabyte board--965-DS3. E6400, ddr800 ram.

I'm perfectly happy with it. I wasn't planning on getting SLI/
Crossfire or anything, so this board is fine for me. haven't tried
overclocking yet, but people seem to have had some very good results. There's always kick-worthy stuff out there, but for now, I'm happy.

Plus I managed to add support to the OpenDarwin (opensource OSX code)
ATA driver for the 965 chipset, so get good speed there too.

So what's the consensus. Should I buy now or hold off? I want to
buy
within the next month as I want to move my other machine over to a
server
role.

Only a few P965 boards are out that have ICH8R, and Intel's retail
branded
P965 will not have it. Only ones in supply are the Asus and Abit.

How or why is that better than the P965 chipset?

Are there differences other than onboard graphics on the G965
chipset?

Get a G965 based motherboard (it has the integrated graphics
which
you
wont
be using of course). You have all the perks, including the
latest
intel fakeraid ICH8R and DDR2-800 support. The only thing you
will
not have is crossfire/sli support as there is only one PCIe x16
port. However a
single
ATI x1950xtx or NV 7950GX2 should be plenty powerful unless you
intend
to
play Elder Scrolls Oblivion @ 2500x1600 on a 30" LCD.
