Chuck, I have both a standalone VCR and one of those copy protected
VCR>>DVD specialized machines, and in both cases (IIRC) the auto
tracking can be manually over-ridden and set to "anything" I want...

Another thing to look for is a Manufactures firmware upgrade for the
(VCR>>DVD) machine. I had to flash two patches into the machine
from  cd-r/ISOs I downloaded from their site... It is a Go_Video
that someone gave me since it worked poorly...  Seems fine now...

Needless to say the automatic tracking adjustment (if there is one) does not adjust the tracking properly. I end up with those irregularities at the bottom, also. I am new to this procedure of recording my VHS tape material to DVD's. I will slowly record all I want to keep and live with the lack of clarity etc. that goes along with the process. At least I am stopping the video from getting worse with age.
