In this case (pardon the pun) it's not proprietary. And also the owner
is "attached" to the box because it was given to him by a friend. A new
case makes it a new computer, not the one he was given. I know, it's
silly. But that's what he wants.
Cost is also a concern for this box. It's just to play with Linux; and
run Dos to see his old AWL, Lisp, Prolog, stuff from years ago. On 5 1/2
inch floppies, if they don't suffer from bit rot. :)
This is The Professor, who I have spoken of on this list. He received
his BS in computer science at the age of 68 in 1986. He turned 86 in
December and is still as sharp as a tack. A Princeton grad ('43), world
traveler, and an interesting man. Taught physics and advanced chemistry
for 28 years. But I digress...

I might just go with this. The original motherboard is flaky, and this
would solve the problem with the least cost. Thanks for the suggestion.

A reinstall does do wonders. Also to remove the crap lite versions of
software that comes with a machine really helps. So much of that crap
just like to get an icon in the tray for name recognition. Some
(Quicktime) are rather predatory about it. One cleans up the HKLM...Run
key only to have it back every time the software is run.

Respectfully, this sounds a little like like the Stones song;

They are all real computers. :)
