First time I heard those types of rumors was with Win95...
A big "free"patch CD...
The only time I remember it happening was when they screwed up
Office97 so bad (before anybody had broadband) that the patches
were so big it turned it into a free re-release on a CD and they even
had to give you new serial number/install keys... (I got a bunch of them.)
From the looks of it, SP3 for XP will be a last minute warmed-over POS
that drives people towaeds Vista even more...

Not if Microsoft simply slipstreamed a comprehensive XP Service Pack 3 into
a DVD that allowed you to install any version of Windows XP that you had a
legal Product Key for. They could sell those DVD's for around twenty bucks
(including shipping).
