Actuall, I removed some back panels and noted that under the heatpipes there is 
a proper socket where the CPU is seated.

I guess, I would have to check the socket type (via cpuid??) and then see if 
there is a newer bios that supports the merom cpu.

Actually, if the CPU is not soldered to the board (and in many cases it 
is not) and if there is a BIOS update to support the Merom, it is very 
doable. Many people have upgraded their Dell XMS M1210 laptops from 
Yonah to Merom.
