Been using Ubuntu for a couple weeks now with some minor annoyances.
The main one is that I can't get any USB keys to work. When I insert
one, I get a message saying "you don't have permissions to mount that
device". If I drop to the command line and mount it with sudo it
works, but then I can't unmount it. Right-clicking on the mount point
and selecting "unmount" results in a "that device is not mounted"
error. And even though the file explorer showed the files being
copied over, they aren't actually on the key.

Secondly, the FAT32 USB key I formatted in Ubuntu is not readable by
windows. I tried reformatting it with windows but I got an "Windows
cannot finish formatting this device" error. WTF? I thought all OSes
could read and write to FAT partitions.

These two problems alone are making me reconsider my switch. I can
understand the need to not run as root all the time but mounting USB
keys should not be one of them.

And no, there is not any U3 crapware on my USB key. I nuked it using
a partition editor a while ago under windows. Now THAT was a painful
experience. But this problem happens with the 6 different USB keys I
have tried, some with U3 and some without.
