Also you may find you're blocked from accessing pics &
ringtones by your 
carriers *cough*Verizon*cough* choice of features.

The software for motorola's is Mobil Phone Tools but
you can also use the 
various free P2K packages to access the file system
directly for copying off 
pics. The cable is simply a USB to mini-USB but
supposedly you need one made for 
a phone (the choke is on the phone end). I've not had
issues using the cable 
that came with my Zen player or the $6 cheap
moto-knockoff cable I bought off 
e-bay on my Cingular branded RAZR.
