two thoughts--

1) I've had similar problems when it was DNS resolution. can you type in IP addresses into Firefox or IE and have it surf properly then? (like http://207.46.19.254/ -- microsoft homepage)

2) could there be any odd proxy settings that both IE/Firefox are picking up somehow? seems unlikely..

guess it could always be remnants of norton causing problems..

The host file is fine, I've tried LSPFix, no change. It had NIS 2006 which was screwed up, but even after removing it, it won't surf.
