Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 with DD-WRT firmware should get pretty good distance. You 
can add a better antenna if necessary. You can pick up a usb adapter with a 
directional antenna for pretty cheap these days ($10-25) and the combo should 
work well. I have a usb one at home but don't know the specific make off hand. 
It's a cheapie but works well.

In a couple weeks I''l be tuning my setup so my sister who is moving in 2 units 
down from me, can tap my wireless access point. I have a few different 
directional antennas and cantennas to try.
