Yes. You pay one way or the other. A monthly fee. I have lifetime subs on mine, though. There is the Tivo 3 which is fully HD and then HD Tivo, which is a somewhat scaled version. When it initially came out, the Tivo3 was around $1000. I currently don't own one, but you can check out .alt.video.ptv.tivo for hints or check the web. The two HD models have an eSATA port so that you can add space via external hookup.

My series 2's sit on my network. The upstairs model is on ethernet and the one downstairs is wireless. Note that Tivos run Lunix so they are very trouble-free to use.
So Tivo HD is a stand alone device that you

You watch on your TV...transfer from Tivo to tivo (in different rooms) to watch on TV...or you can transfer to your PC. I haven't done any capture of HD content, but I do on SD over analog and digital. The analog is crappy on a PC, but the digital is much better. I'm not sure about the formats, though. with My series 2, I need to use the TivoToGo software so that I can view a .tivo file on my PC. There are tools out there to convert them to almost any format.
I have the entire Tour de France downloaded and sitting on HD.
Tivo is great because it's trouble free..to use..your dad can use it...

my Dad has Alzheimers...he has a hard time using the toaster. No matter what I decide I am not touching his cable set up.

you can programming it over the 'net...you can get music, watch movies from Amazon.com, etc. Stream music, surf the net... Maybe I should not have opened this can of worms on you...but with all that big screen goodness over there....I couldn't help myself.

not at all..... the more info I have the better! I appreciate you talking the time!
