I drove my two Samsung monitors in portrait mode with no problems on my oldish
ATI 9800 Pro. that was at 1600 x 1200 on both in 2D text mode, not 3D gamer
mode. So I'm a bit confused that you took a performance hit. The ATI drivers
had support for switching from landscape to portrait, too. My nVidia card does
that too, but it has two DVI outputs rather than one of each. Bottom line is I
don't see that its such an issue in finding a card, especially since you have
budget! Oh, in the end, I switched back to landscape mode, running at
1600x1200 on each. I just like it better for what I do AND my monitors don't
look good looking at at them. Very uneven from top to bottom on portrait mode.
