Christopher,
Thanks for the reply and question. I have not tested the /always on/ feature yet. Yes, I recall that during my last dsl usage I was always on' because the rt-314 only ran that way. And, I only recall my assigned IP address changing once due to a network problem on Verizon's side. But, back then I also had sw firewalls installed on my machines. ATM I do not use additional sw firewalls on my machines. I am still evaluating this however. So far, the router seems to have a very strong SPI firewall. In any case, I do not mind the shifting IP addy's other than several of them I have gotten seemed to be completely dead even though the router indicates a solid working connection. I guess the dsl links I get are much the same as the slow/dead modems I use to dial in to. For now I do not see the need for /always on/. If I am not using the Internet, I do not mind the disconnection. If I am disconnected, I lessen the chance of an infection I think.
Best,
Duncan

And the router has /on-demand/ and /always on/ selections also. Just now I am using the /on-demand/ setting. I figure that if I am not using the internet there is no need to allow the internet a connection to my LAN. Yes, I do still own a tiny tin hat! LOL!

I have a "dynamic" IP Address with road runner that hasn't changed in almost 2 years. If you switch to always on does your IP address still change?
