Wait - you noticed a difference in quality between HDMI and DVI-D? Hmmmm...so is one showing a lower resolution signal than the other? That might be what's going on - the DVI output works but the signal is getting downrezzed.
Otherwise I would have thought the human eye couldn't tell the difference between the two if they were outputting the same rez. Something we totally forgot to mention (sorry) was that in order to have Blu-Ray or HD-DVD output show up your PC video card must support HDCP and I believe you must have Vista as well (but I'm not 100% positive on that).
