Another nice trick is to press Command+Shift+4

It changes your cursor into a little target, and let's you draw a box around whatever part of the screen you want to capture.

It also--I think since 10.5--shows the screen coordinates of your mouse location in pixels, so you can use it to measure distances if you need to.
