Bino,
I do not yet used 1TB hard drives. I'll leave that focus to the
Collective. I do now use 500GB Seagate drives in my NAS (new toy!). They
are both of the "DB35.2 series" ST3500830SCE SATA devices.
I have used Seagate hard drives since I can not remember when. Even before
I bought my 1st PC and joined this Collective, the machines I worked with
used Seagate or CDC drives. Good enough for Business; good enough for the
home! I tend to buy for long term reliability; not instant speed
need. Buying/RMAing/waiting/ for hard drives is a great pain when "toast"
happens. ... :)
I do understand all the personal comments from various Collective members.
Stuff happens. WE all have our own favorites. I read, with interest, all
the various methods our Collective have created to deal with the realities
of the "disk drive." As I look back just 15yrs, I am happy with the entire
crop of current hard drive technology now available.
Yes, certainly there are still some real dogs out there. The Collective
knows who/what they are!
I now own 10yr old "Cheetahs" that still work like brand new (within
reason/OS/speed/logic?/)
Should I come to need 1TB hard drives, I will go Seagate. (Firmware
glitches notwithstanding!)
Unless there is a compelling reason for another brand name.
I have also used CDC, WD, Hitachi, Maxtor (pre-whomever), IBM, and Fujitsu.
I always wander back to Seagate. They work for me. The 3/5yr warranty
argument is "personal" at best. The majority of hard drives I have bought
either failed within "MY" infant mortality window and got replaced for free
(except shipping) via RMA, or, they are all still here and operational long
past their warranty dates! At terminal failure I simply whatever new tech
is available. Truck on! Again, stuff happens. JMHO.
Best,
Duncan

What are your guy's thoughts on buying HDs nowadays? You can get 1TB SATA
HDs for <$100 (sometimes even $80 on good sales) so the price/storage ratio
is so-sweet it's almost a no-brainer to buy like 5-10 and go into some crazy
RAID setup!
But I keep seeing reviews on Newegg and other sites about these things
FAILING all the time (across all manufacturers), and that makes me worried.
I'd rather spend more and get something good that will definitely last and
be reliable.so if I buy SAS drives, will they definitely fit that bill?
Problem is they seem too expensive:

(A guy at work was going to give me the adapter to use these btw, since they
don't seem to sell them as much. :P)
Or do you have to hunt and find the enterprise class SATA drives that are
better quality than the general consumer ones, like this one?

I've been looking at storagereview, but they don't seem to break down the
more reliable class as a whole vs the cheaper stuff.thoughts?
