Rick,
For the most part, I completely agree with your points. But, as Winterlight asks, and, I have seen with this present crop of video cards, this diagnostic/repair procedure may be problematic. Not to mention a loss of card warranty.

What really confuses me is that the really BIG hs/cooler guys do not seem to offer any kind of "oem-repalcement" video card cooler. The model Stan shared is so over the top to me; but a very nice 'green' choice. I saved his link just in case either of my current passive's cause trouble! Worse that Asus seems to have walked away from the problem.

It does appear that these new series video cards are not like the old GF3's and GF4's I have experience with. I have mod'd mine several times over the years to keep them running. LOL! Now, it is actually funny. They are all AGP; AND, I no longer have any m/b's that do AGP! Well, at least I got to practice spreading paste!

My newest video cards are both ATI and both use passive heatsinks w/o fans. When they get sketchy, I'll go back to nVidia.
Best,
Duncan

Dumb easy question:
Do these fans actually fail electrically (coils/sensor-etc),
or do the bearings freeze, score, or gum up from the heat?
OR, is it a problem with the controls on the card?
(It looks like a three wire fan.)

I've always solved fan problems with a disassembly,
cleaning the bearings, and new oil, and I'm sure most
(if not all) of us here are capable of that, so I'm a little
confused about the EXACT problem.
