I agree with this. One thing you pretty much want to do with a DSL modem is make sure you don't own it in case there is a power surge you can make them repair it.
Then go WALL -> DSL Modem -> Ethernet -> Ethernet Line protector (Like a APC UPS Ethernet surge supressor) -> Router.
Isolate the DSL modem outside your ethernet network (And make sure your router, switch, etc are all on UPS's for surge protection.
I see so many places that have APC 750's protecting all their PC's but then their DSL modem is plugged directly into their switch in the closet, effectively nullifying their protection.
Isolate your network as well as your power. Electricity travels over copper, cat5 is copper....
(I am actually guilty of this at home, I do *not* have a filter between my cable modem and my router, I will be fixing that soon though.)
