Friend, customer running a new puter with w7 home premium 64bit, her
printer ( canon xx500) works fine.
Tried to map her laptop to print, can not make it go. I assume I need
to add the X86 drivers to the w7 install but w7 will not let me. DL'ed
directly from Canon.
FWIW the printer on the w7 box just was recognized and worked on first
boot but when it asks me for additional drivers it just will not take
them.
AT a loss at the moment. As a work around put a folder on the laptop to
copy docs to and a shortcut on the w7 box she can print so at the moment
no big deal but I really HATE not being able to make it go. I wonder to
myself if a newer printer might work. Worked fine when she was running
xp. I have mapped many a printer. My w7 box has no problem printing
thru my XP box. ( opposite to her situation)
You are running into a driver version mismatch, even installing drivers
directly to the XP machine will not work because it is getting the printer
name differently than what the drivers tell you.
Possible solutions:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-7/share-files-and-printers-between-windows-7-and-xp/
The other possible solution is to share the printer and connect to it as
an LPT port.
Example: (one line command)
net use LPT1: \\w7-machinename\printershare password /USER:domain\username
/savecred /persistent:yes
Use that command on the windows XP machine and just use the mapped LPT
port to setup the printer. I know it works XP-XP, not sure on W7 yet
though.
