This may be a very good idea. I have been using a 4650 and a 4350 with
bare ATI drivers in XP. I did not allow the install of the Catalyst
Control Center.
I know. Not W7. And, not as advanced as you, but worth a try.

Try this. Pull all the ATI drivers off the system and reinstall without
the Catalysy Control Center.
