Thane,
I understand. Sorry, I can NOT backup D/E/F partitions ATM. I can only view the hd's partitions via a BART CD; and, via CMD.
ATM, I'm just happy this old horse still grabs some dirt!

My BART CD is very old, and, it has many glitches and limitations.
I am trying to (mentally) recall what may be on these partitions.

True. Much of it may be of no consequence. If so, I will just waste the hd and start afresh. This I can do.
Still doing this research/thought!
Thanks,
Duncan

JRS,
Thanks. I do see your point. But, for so many years I have tried to
avoid having the OS and DATA on the same partition.
Yet, I may still just do as you suggest.

ATM, I suspect either a problem in the MBR (dorked sectors, rootkit?,
whatever?), or, missing/corrupt XP boot files in the C:\ partition. I
have seen fixes/repairs for both of these situations on my XP CD's
recovery console.
Investigation continues.

Worst case: I'll just kiss off the contents of D/E/F and just start
completely fresh. And, then do all the normal monkey-business I need
to do for MS to be happy!

If you don't need the contents of the other partitions, just zap the
disk and repartition. If you need the data, back it up and then zap and
repartition.
