If using a program like ImgBurn does not list the info for a blank, then it sounds like a dead drive. The drive is rated to 16X on DVD+R SL cording to NEC's site:

I'd upgrade or even samegrade the firmware before I gave up:

Lastly never use any media except Taiyo Uden for SL & Verbatim Datalife (Singapore) for DL:
