I mean using your laptop screen and a second monitor independently. The person I am trying to help has a widescreen HP that is a little more then one year old running Windows 7 Ultimate and all it will let me do is run as a clone or as an expanded screen... not as two separate monitors = built in screen + external but independently.

I haven't seen any modern laptops with video out that didn't support using
it as a second (non-cloned) monitor. If the former, any Dell D series or E
series Latitude laptops with a dock will support two external monitors.
