Josh,
Please spend some time on the Netgear ReadyNAS forums. Should be able to
read w/o registration.

OK. Perhaps Netgear is not program-focused on WD drives. I'll accept
this. They do so push "enterprise" level hard drives. In a "NAS" focus I
understand this. And, Netgear does have a reasonably good (concise) list
of acceptable (tested) hard drives on their Hardware Compatibility List
(HCL). I'll even accept that many of the 'acceptable' hard drives are no
longer available. Fine, Netgear is stuck in a technology crunch......... :(
As a Duo owner, I follow the Netgear HCL. I use hard drives from the
HCL. I have had zero trouble since JRS talked me into this NAS. "Mikey
Likes IT!"
I completely accept that my choice of "NAS" was/is a "lost leader." I
fully expect that my model will go obsolete in the next 12 months, at
best. Netgear now fabricates their current NAS using Atom and C2D cpus.
They have moved away from all things SPAC. Matters not to me. My SPARC
3107 runs just fine. My warranty (full replacement) is valid for the
next 3 years. Between now and 2013, I will learn more about
NAS............. :)
(Besides, JRS will probably upgrade first, and, I will most likely just
follow!.......... LOL!)
As I read the forum, the majority of "bitch" entries about hard drives
are against WD. And, the "green" series of hard drives seem to have
engineering (JMHO) in them that runs counter to default NAS operation.
Again, JHMO. OK, blame this on bad Netgear F/W. That could be fair.
Accepted. And, I am not a NAS expert. I just use one very happily ATM
with my pair of Seagate drives!
YMMV.
Best,
Duncan

Growing pains? Can you elaborate because those are what I've been
waiting to acquire for my next upgrade.

Zool,
I can not dabble with your 1st question at all. I use the "Barracuda"
and "Cheetah" series and have had very good service.
In my NAS forums, the WD Greens are having major growth pains. I know
nothing about a Samsung offering.

Duncan

What's the concensus on the best low power 2TB Drives.
I need it for my NAS and don't need blazing speed, I need cool running
operations.
Should I get the Barracuda LP series or the WD Green, or the new highly
touted Samsungs.......?
