OK, I have a new 2TB Fantom external drive that supports ESATA and
USB2. I am going to use it to store media and I thought I would use
the ESATA because it is much faster.
My ASUS Maximus II formula board has a ESATA jack, Intel P45/ICH10R chipset.
If I plug the drive in ESATA and treat it like I would an internal
drive, and just use it as a storage drive, will I have anything to
worry about. Outside of hot swapping, is there something about ESATA
that is problematic?
thanks w

You have to enable the SATA AHCI function in the BIOS and have an OS that
supports it in order to have hot swapping and NCQ functionality. AMD
chipset mobo's are problematic getting AHCI working but perhaps they've
gotten it fixed in the latest 890GX/FX SB850 series along with Windows 7.
Do a Google and see what others are saying. Also, there is the additional
complication introduced by the recent change to SATA 6 gig controllers.
This is where AMD is clearly superior to Intel by having native
implementation with full bandwidth both ways. I haven't spent a lot of
time trying to get AHCI working but the few times I've tried with an
existing install of Windows it never worked and a couple times trashed
things so badly I had to do a re-install. Just my honest opinion and your
mileage may vary..

I think that depends on if the chipset supports hotplugging.

Is native External SATA port on the motherboard something that can be
treated like a USB port ... can you plug a ESATA drive in and out
while running? Or do you have to treat the drive the same way you
would an internal drive?
thanks
