Hello Thane, I see this a lot. It could either be that it is taking longer to calibrate and go ready, if this is happening replace it quickly.
Another thing is that the power supply is not powering the hard drive enough on the first boot after power is turned on. This is one of the most problems that do occur with hard drives. I would check the power supply to see if it is sending enough Amps to the HD during initial Boot. This means the DC +12v and +5v could be good, just not enough amps to turn on the HD correctly.
