Either configuration would be fine assuming the router/switch ports are gigabit. A hub-and-spoke approach is technically superior to the cascaded design you were previously using. In practice it's unlikely to make a material difference either way for low device counts and throughput requirements.

This allows both the East and West sides of my home to connect at the Gateway/Router instead of playing/hoping the 'uplink'/'dwnlink' business between the 2 switches really works(?). I am starting to have doubts. I am willing to let the new Gateway/Router be the 'go between' (sit in the middle). Thoughts, opinions??????????? Duncan
