Here's the Pro vs EVO writeup I sent to the list on Oct 1: ******** The 840 Pro is positioned as Samsung's premium drive. It uses 19nm MLC NAND.
The 840 EVO is the successor to the original 840 (non-pro). It uses 19nm TLC NAND. TLC NAND offers greater densities by storing 3 bits per cell instead of 2 as with traditional MLC. It makes for a less costly drive, but has fewer program/erase (P/E) cycles and lower write performance. The original 840 was a good enough drive (I have one of them), but the EVO was released later with some pretty innovative technology to mitigate the write penalty - specifically, it features a small amount of SLC NAND in the package that increase write performance. However, it retains the TLC advantage of offering higher capacities at lower price points. The net result is that the 840 Pro is still considered the premium tier, but the EVO actually turns in better performance in some tests. So, what to buy? Price and budget may be your best guide. The 840 Pro tops out at 512GB vs. the EVO's 1TB, so if you want a big drive, the EVO may be the best choice. Personally, I'd probably stick with the Pro for my premium builds, but I'm tempted to get an EVO to play with. You honestly can't go wrong with either. ******** No, except perhaps in high specialized use cases, a human would not be able to detect a meaningful difference between any quality SSD released in the last 2 or 3 years. However, I do give Samsung the nod over the Crucial on firmware reliability. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of FORC5 Sent: Sunday, November 3, 2013 9:08 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [H] samsung pro v evo ? anyone know the difference between the Samsung EVO and pro ? I see Samsung has a 1 tb competing with the Crucial M500 ( I have 3 of those ) Specs show the Samsung faster but I do not think a human can detect the difference. Last Samsung 840 pro I bought the transfer SW was not as advertised but the drive is alive an well. Can anyone recommends SW to evaluate, test or diagnose SSD's ? thanks FP Date: Sunday, November 3rd, 2013 ***Caution, Tagline Below *** **Tallyho** ****************************************** They know enough who know how to learn. ******************************************
