I am looking for a Hotspot... or maybe a USB stick that I can plug any phone sim into, plug it into a laptop and have it work when I am on the road. I would prefer the former but would settle for the latter. Every Hotspot modem/device I find seems to be tied to a cell phone provider. I actually purchased a Netgear AT&T unite 781S from Ebay and have a ATT data sim for it. It works great but AT&T is expensive particularly for a large 8GB data account.

At the first of the year I was offered a no contract $40 NetConnect sim with unlimited text - phone and data from my long time internet phone provider NetTalk. So I signed up for one... it actually runs on the T-Mobile network. I still have my AT&T phone and I planned on using the new NetTalk account for a hot spot. Then I found out my Netgear AT&T unite 781S only works with a AT&T data sim and worse it cannot be unlocked.

When I tried to buy one ...or anything retail I keep coming up with branded hotspot devices. I am really surprised that no manufacturer seems to make a retail device that will accept any sim with a data account to create a hotspot. Even the devices that are supposedly unlocked from Sierra warn that if you reset them they will lock.

There are usb devices that you plug into a laptop and use it with a sim but I don't see any known manufactures. Does anybody have experience with these?

I can, of course, use one of my phones as a hotspot but that is not an ideal solution as the phones get really hot when transmitting large amount of data and I would like to be able to leave the device in my truck and use it from there. Does anybody have any experience doing this .. if so I would be grateful for some advice on implementing something. Thanks.
